Tom Berenger's Rifle
This is the weapon that Tom Berenger uses in the movie. This is the U.S.M.C M40A1 weapon system or a replica of that system. The rifle is basically a Remington model 700 short action that has been tricked out by the Marine Corps The Caliber is 7.62X51 NATO, for all of us non-military personell that would be .308 Winchester. The Marine Corps M40A1 has been in use since 1966. The rifle is 43.97" long, weighs 14.45 lbs. and has a 24" barrel. The scope is a Unertl 10 power with a Mil-Dot reticle. Of course, in the movies they always seem to have to make the reticles look cooler so thats not what you see when they to the POV shots. The stock is a McMillan A1 which is made of fiberglass.

Billy Zane's Rifle
Originally I had thought that Billy Zane's rifle was an HK PSG1 but after doing some research and watching the movie again I have to dispel this common myth. The rifle is actually a HK-SR9(TC) with a HK91 forearm and bipod installed. This makes it almost a dead ringer for a PSG1.The biggest visual difference I see is where the butt connects to the receiver. Of course the biggest difference is price. You can probably pick up a SR9(TC) for around $2,000 and a genuine PSG1 will cost you at least $10,000. I will show you pictures of all three rifles below.
This is the SR9(TC)

Here are some older HK91's
