Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Origin

Overview: The mayhem and adventure of Buffy and her slaying pals has been well chronicled in both the hit television show and the popular monthly comic book, but little is known of her origin beyond the cult film. The film strayed for series-creator Joss Whedon’s original concept for the character and portrayed a different Buffy than had been originally conceived. Collected from the first time is Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Origin, the adaptation of Joss Whedon’s original script into comic-book form. Join Buffy on her first adventure ever and find out how she developed in the Slayer we know and love today.

Being a Joss Whedon fanboy I finally had to delve into the Buffy comic series. This seemed like an obvious start for me. While the book wasn’t extremely exciting, it did however portray the Buffy universe as we know it (except for a few frames when Xander looks completely generic) The story sets up things that Buffy mentions in the series about her old home, L.A. We meet her first watcher and his complete difference from Giles. (If you never watched the series, I’ve already lost you) The first thing visually you’ll pick up is that the vamps are green. I’m not sure why that bothered me, but it did. I guess it did make it very easy to tell vampires from people. The story is solid, but every issue is resolved remarkably quickly, leaving little room for building of tension in the story. The art is well done with one minor quirk. Often Xander appears indistinct from any other male brunette. Anyone who’s familiar with the character understands that Xander stands out no matter what he does. All said and done, it’s a decent little read for a fan of the series, but I think those that are unfamiliar with it will find themselves bored.
