To be honest I did not like this book. I have always liked Chris Claremont as a writer but he failed in this book. It had no flow and at times it seemed like pages were missing from the story. I even at one time flipped back a page to make sure that I was not missing pages. I didn't feel that Claremont had a good feel for Captain Kirk. Kirk's dialog at times felt like something Bones would have been saying. The artwork at times was not very good and was confusing. Confusing artwork and confusing writing causes a book to be hard to read and makes it not very good.

I will admit first off that I am a Trekkie. So I have a soft spot for anything “Trek” related. When my editor (the illustrious JasonJames!) asked me to review “Debt of Honor” my first reaction was, “Wow, I remember reading this years ago!” Truth be told I did not remember a bit of it, but I read more novels than your average person, so I’m not surprised when a random graphic novel doesn’t spark instant recognition. Anyway, enough random rambling. This novel is set after Star Trek IV, and uses a few characters from it. At the beginning of the book Kirk must come to terms with the fact he feels worse about destroying the USS Enterprise than he does about the death of his own son. The book does kind of rolls on from that “I don’t feel like saving the universe, but that’s my job” feeling. The artwork is not outstanding, but is adequate. The characters are a little off, but Bones is dead on. I also think the authors took special joy in slipping references to others ST characters, including on panel that I swear looks like Capt. Picard in a group of officers in the background. I enjoyed this novel. It wasn’t so spectacular that I need to go out and get my own copy, but it is a nice relaxing afternoon read.
