I’ve never made it a secret that I’m a Marvel man, and that DC has always played second fiddle for me. I was at Toys R Us with some birthday money and looking to pick a new PSP title. There on the bottom with a price tag of $9 was Justice League Heroes. I thought about it, but in the end I decided a Superhero game for under ten buck was worth it, even if it was crummy. Holy @#*% I was surprised! Pleasant gameplay, well made cut scenes, a halfway decent storyline. Really I couldn’t ask for much more from a bargain game. The lowdown is you run two heroes at a time, which suits the solo style I ran on the PSP. Most of the time your heroes are chosen for you, which was one my big griefs on the game. Powers and power ups are done well, and while many have claimed this is the lesser game when compared to Marvel’s Ultimate Alliance, I much prefer the power up and leveling system done here in JLH. You can unlock heroes and alternate costume for your collection. (Though four of the unlockables are the various incarnations of the Green Lantern) All of the heroes are represented faithfully, and leveling their powers along with your game experience feels right. I was excited to play Batman, Green Lantern, Flash and Green Arrow. Batman became a durable close combat fighter because his batarangs just weren’t working for me. Green Lantern felt like he should, though my Green Lantern ran out of juice far too often for my liking. Flash was a genuine surprise as games tend to dumb down fast characters to fit them in the game. Green Arrow I had to work to unlock, but was fun for the two levels I got play him in. The real surprise for me was my hands down favorite in the game. Can you guess? Zatanna. I know I’ve never heard of her before either. Out of everyone she was the most fun I had playing, and because of the leveling system I could use her fireballs all daylong. Doesn’t sound like fun? Say these words with me and try not to smile: Heat. Seeking. Fireballs. Yep, I thought you’d come around.

I’ve mentioned all the great points now to touch on the downers. Character selections is too limited for most of the game. In my game I unlocked Aquaman (he was ridiculously cheap), Hawkgirl, Green Arrow, and the Huntress (Who was my favorite backup to Batman, and a heck of a lot of fun.) I was hoping that once you beat the game you could take anyone in wherever, but I guess than some of the cut scenes wouldn’t have made sense. I mention it because you unlock on of your favorites, and you might not get to play them before you have beaten the game. Leading to my next downer. Short. The game could have put a few more “whoever” levels in there and really made this game a champion. My final beef is the man of steel. Superman and I have never been on great terms. He’s like an old friend that if you run into on the street you stop and say hello, but you really have no more interest in them than that. I never disliked Superman, but I felt he was overplayed way past his worth. That changed for me in JLH. Superman is annoying. Sure his “super” punch rules. But the voice acting and lines written for him grate on your nerves that by the end of the story where you have to watch Superman’s back, you stop and ask “Why?” Truth be told, if you are not a Super fan, you will be a hater by the end.

Overall, Justice League Heroes is worth purchasing. (Esspecially at the deal I got!) It’s fun especially for us comic book fans. A good story and despite it’s setbacks still makes for a good game.

High Points:
DC heroes are made the way they should be
Powers are easy to pull off and become second nature
Levelling is a pain free process, with sound bytes from the hero to help you out
Levels are fun, balancing brawls and puzzles

Low Points:
Superman
Could have used another level or two to lengthen it out.
Being more open in choosing backup characters would have been nice.
