As a Lord of the Rings fan this was a natural choice for me. EA did such a wonderful job with Two Towers and Return of the King. I was really interested in what they could add to middle-earth. Answer you get to play the fellowship, not fellowship. Confused? Ok, let me explain you play a group that is teamed up when a captain from Gondor is trying to catch up to Boromir. You play as Berethor (not Boromir), our main hero, Idrial (not Arwen) the elven spellcaster, Hadhod (not Gimli), dwarven tenacity at it’s finest, Elegost (not Aragorn), master of all things bow, Morwen (not Eowyn) Rohan warrior, and Eoden (not Eomer) Rohan horseman, without a horse. This game is fun. It’s the only game I borrowed from a friend, beat it, then a year later bought my own copy and beat it again. Sure, some lines from the movies were borrowed and tooled around. But every quest, even the little side ones feels like it’s something your characters would actually care about. Add in Ian Mckellan’s voice to guide you and this is a treasure.
High Points
Gorgeous graphics from a PS2 game
Character switching adds a new level to the strategy of combat
Feels like a Middle-earth game should
Low Points
Mines of Moria is an irritating level with goblins jumping you for ever other step you take
Combat while fun, can be repetitive, especially once you get higher abilities to slow down enemies
Some items just feel silly to carry. Our hero wielding a goblin shield? You laugh until you see how much stronger it is than yours.
