I am sure by now you are saying, what is this guy smoking, a 5 star rating. I know it is rare for me to hand out a 5 star rating so please hear me out on why I gave one to The Goonies. First off this is a rare film were it holds just as much magic today as it did when I was watching it as a kid. There are many films I go back and watch now that I am an adult and wonder how it was that I could watch it over and over again as a kid. Not this one, I watch it now and it still is a fun film to watch. I think also I can relate some to the characters, or at least at this point can relate portions of my childhood to that of the characters. I remember as a kid being hit pretty hard by the wishing well scene. I have a few pennies at the bottom of a wishing well that didn't come true and can respect the idea that Mouth had on taking them back. I have heard the argument that this movie just is not practical. Sure, I get that. The thing that over rides that is the youthful spirit that the film displays. From the pinchers of power to the amazment of coming to the end of the journey. This film caputures the essence of youthful spirit as good as it can. Not to mention that it has a great soundtrack to go along with it. It also has some great scenes that movie makers of today need to look at and remember how it is done. Lets take for example the opening scene. Almost all the main characters are introduced in that opening scene from the bad guys in the movie to most of the kids. For those that are confused by this, go back and watch the opening scene again, really watch it and pay attention to how it works. Overall this film does a brilliant job telling a fun loving youthful story that I still enjoy as much today as I did as a kid. You will never hear me complain about pulling it out and watching it again.
