Harold and Maude

Synopsis: Death-obsessed teen Harold Chasen (Bud Cort) is being hassled by his domineering mother (Vivian Pickles) to play the dating game, but he'd much rather attend funerals, which is where he meets the feisty Maude (Ruth Gordon), a geriatric widow who's high on life. The seemingly mismatched pair forms a bond that turns into a highly unconventional -- but ultimately satisfying – romance in this comical cult favorite from director Hal Ashby.

I was told about this movie by a friend. Of course this friend of mine is a hippy want a be that I suspect has smoked his fair share of herbals in his life. With that I decided to give this movie a chance. I have to say I was riveted for the first 45 minutes of the movie. Here is this young man doing some pretty bizarre things to try and get his mother attention. I found it rather comical and entertaining. After the 45 minute mark it really starts to become a movie that is pushing living the hippy way, as the main character becomes closer and closer to the 79 year old woman that he has found companionship in he. I am all about people living the way they want to live and being free. It just seemed that this movie wanted to remind you of that in just about every scene past the 45 minute mark. One thing I wanted to bring up is that his movie had a dark feel to it. I would almost say that it felt like a Stanley Kubrick film. Overall I enjoyed watching the film once I turned my filter on to filter out the message about being who you wanted to be. This is movie classic that any movie buff should watch.
