This movie follows a teen who goes by the name of John Smith. He seems like a normal teenager that maybe is above average in build, strength, and dexterity. He is normal other than some strange markings on his leg. Of course one night he is chasing after a girl and all of a sudden a blue light comes out of his hands. Of course someone records this and posts it on youtube. John also has another man that travels with him that is his guardian as he is being hunted by a group that wants to eliminate anyone that has those markings. To be honest the trailer for this movie more than gives away key points to this movie. Such as the fact that he meets Jane Doe, another one that is like him. As I am watching the movie I keep thinking about every girl that he meets and was wondering if she is Jane Doe. During his travels he seems to be very eager to go to school something that I myself found kind of strange. Most teenagers I know would rather not go to school but then again we are in a fantasy world of a movie so I guess it would be normal to almost beg to go to school. There are plenty of tried and true moments such as the girl of his desire is the x girlfriend of the quarterback and is off limits. I do have to say though that this movie does do a nice job balancing teenage drama with action. This movie does target teenagers and with that has to have some of the high school drama that they seem to love and flock to. It does work in this film as it makes you understand the characters better even if they forget to explain all the differences that John has. The action for the most part is pretty cool and has lots of special effects. I have to say that one of the scenes I had a major problem with but outside of that the action was pretty good. I do think that a lot more should have been done to explain John Smith characters and the others that are like him. This was originally planned to have a second movie so I am sure much of that was being saved for that but it does leave you hanging or at least wondering about several aspects of this movie. The acting was pretty good and for the most part I really go into the characters. Overall I did enjoy this movie even if the leaving me hanging or the not really giving to many details kind of annoyed me. This was directed by DJ Caruso who also directed Disturbia and he does a great job finding a balance of teen movie and something that adults will find interesting. This movie does have some strong sci-fi roots and with that could turn a few people away even though the sci-fi aspects are pretty mild and at time even add a little humor to the film.
