Of Note: The makers of MST3K were so annoyed by their experiences having to work within a major studio on this film that they later parodied the experience on the TV series. In episode 704: "The Incredible Melting Man" the host segments are about Crow's screenplay being purchased by a studio then ruined by the executives (Dr. Forrester and Mother Forrester) as they vainly try to shoot it and screen it for audiences. Series writer and star Mary Jo Pehl would later call the episode an "exercise in healing" after the ordeal of MST3K: The Movie.
First off I have to say I never been a very big fan of the TV series. I like movies way to much and have always felt that these guys were nothing more than glorified commentators. There really is not much to say about this movie other than a mad scientist is trying to drive a human mad by making him watch the worlds crappiest movies. For me this translates into a character that feels like something you would see on the power rangers. He is over the top and I just don't find him all that funny. The mad scientist makes a human and two robot companions watch "This Island Earth", which is a pretty bad movie but given when it was made I would have to say it fits right in with other movies of its time. It was good enough that I had to keep telling myself that I was not suppose to be following the movie but following the commentary that went with the movie. The commentary ranges from obnoxious, lame, to at times funny. As a fan of movies it is hard for me to really not want to watch the movie without the crazy commentary. Overall I just don't find the commentary all that funny and actually enjoyed the movie they were making fun of more than what they added. I am sure if you are a fan of the TV series and even other movie parodies then this will be right up your ally.
