Serenity

Synopsis: A passenger with a deadly secret. Six rebels on the run. An assassin in pursuit. When the renegade crew of Serenity agrees to hide a fugitive on their ship, they find themselves in an action-packed battle between the relentless military might of a totalitarian regime that will destroy anything - or anyone - to get the girl back and the bloodthirsty creatures who roam the uncharted areas of space. This is such a great movie and should be watched by anyone who likes sci/fi and or good action films. First, the cast is perfect in every roll. 2nd the writing and directing is above standard. I was a fan of the TV show and if you know of the TV show you know that it was canceled by Fox. Joss Whedon and the fans insisted that the series be continued and it was in the form of this movie. Whedon did the fans shiny and created a great film. So what makes this movie great, well the characters are done so well that you laugh with them, cry with them, and fall in love with the movie with them. This movie has humor, action and Jayne. If you have not watched this movie you should join the browncoats and get on board for a great ride.

Review by: Shooter I watched this movie before I ever watched the series that it was based on. Then I borrowed the series, called “Firefly” from Mr. James because I was intrigued. After I watched the series I had to watch this movie again. I warn you that without watching the series you will not fully appreciate this movie.

Admittedly, I am a big science fiction fan, as far as movies go anyway. I can’t stand some of the ultra cheesy SCI FI series that show up on cable. Every once in a while somebody gets one right. I think they did this right and on a small budget to boot. (remember the small budget thing while watching this movie). The movie and the original series, which aired on FOX, are built on the same premise and even have most of the same characters and actors. The premise that you may need to understand before you watch the movie is that the U.S. and China were the only two world powers left on earth. The two cultures basically integrated, this way they were also able to swear (in Mandarin) on cable television whilst avoiding FCC scrutiny. So far I have made 4 trips to China, and being versed a little in Mandarin my self, I found this particularly amusing. So if you really want to know what they were saying check it out HERE.

Serenity, is a bit like “Starwars” meets “The Good the Bad and the Ugly”. In fact, there are a lot of parallels here. I’m not going to waste our time listing them here but you will see them if you watch this movie. Over all, I enjoyed this movie but after I watched the series I had a new respect and enjoyed this movie more. If you are a fan of the series this is a must watch movie. The funny part is that if you watch this movie and haven’t seen the series before you will want to watch the series. The good news? Both are available on DVD.
