Synopsis: Who is the man who hides his scarred face behind a mask? Hero or madman? Liberator or oppressor? Who is V - and who will join him in his daring plot to destory the totalitarian regime that dominates his nation?

From the creators of The Matrix trilogy comes V For Vendetta, an arresting and uncompromising vision of the future based on the powerfully subersive graphic novel. Natalie Portman stars as Evey, a working-class girl who must determine if her hero has become the very menace he's fighting against. Hugo Weaving plays V - a bold, charismatic freedom fighter driven to exact revenge on those who disfigured him. And Stephen Rea portrays the detective leading a desperate quest to capture V before he ignites a revolution. The stakes rise. The tension electrifies. The action explodes. Whose side are you on? In V's world, there is no middle ground.

Lets clear up a couple of things before I even start the review. First, this movies does leave the graphic novel in several places but for the most part is true to the story. The deviations are both good and bad, early in the movie V goes on a rant using words that start with v, I really liked this scene. The biggest negative was the ending, the graphic novel's ending to me made more sense. The second issue is that I was very skeptical of the Wachowski brothers ever since the 3rd matrix. As far as the movie goes, it was very good. The casting was exceptional. Hugo Weaving plays V better than could be expected. Portman is great as Evey and just makes this movie hum. I think it is a great movie and fits into most people's dvd collections.

I never read the graphic novel which is the case for most movies I review. I'm just not a big comic book fan. I guess I'd rather watch live action than imagine the pictures moving around on the page. Because of this I can't compare the ovel to the movie but I can say that I liked the movie quite a bit. I like the idea of V taking on the corrupt government through "terrorist" acts that don't hurt anyone but the intended targets. I loved the story and I think that Natalie Portman is so cute I could just eat her up. Natalie's acting in this movie is excellent as it has been in most of her recent films and she takes her character through an emotional transformation in the movie that is truly exceptional. This movie isn't the best in it's genre but it is near the top and definitely a must see.
