Memorable Quotes

Selene: I am a Death Dealer, sworn to destroy those known as the Lycans. Our war has waged for centuries, unseen by human eyes. But all that is aobut to change.

Selen: Whether you like it or not, you're in the middle of a war that has been raging for the better part of a thousand years. A blood feud between vampires and lycans.

Lucian: You're acting like a pack of rabid dogs. And that, gentlemen, simply will not do. Not if you expect to defeat the vampires on their own gorund. Not if yo uexpect to survive at war.

Selene: Though I cannot predict the future, the consequences of this night will reverberate through the halls of both great covens for many years to come. Two vampire elders have been slain, one by my own hand. Soon, Marcus will take the throne, and a tide of anger and retribution will spill out into the night. Differences will be set aside. Allegiances will be made. And soon, I will become the hunted.

Viktor: Your incompetence is becoming most... *taxing*.

Trivia

Director Len Wiseman opted to shoot many of the action and effects sequences live, without computer imagery. In one scene a werewolf seems to run more than 50 mph behind a speeding car. The scene was shot using an elaborate rig towed behind a vehicle, with actor Michael Sheen doing the running.

White Wolf, Inc. and author Nancy A. Collins filed suit against Sony Pictures, Screen Gems, and Lakeshore Entertainment on 4 September 2003 for copyright infringement little more than a week before the theatrical release of Underworld, alleging 17 counts of copyright infringement, and claiming over seventy points of unique similarity between White Wolf's roleplaying games, "Vampire: The Masquerade", "Werewolf: The Apocalypse", and their creation, "The World of Darkness", in which the games are set. Nancy A. Collins is the author of a short story, "The Love of Monsters", published in 1994 by White Wolf Inc, and set in the World of Darkness, which she claims the entire plot of Underworld is based on.

At the start of the movie when Selene encounters a werewolf in the train tunnel, you hear a wolf howl - the sound effect is taken directly from An American Werewolf in London

The woman in the picture Selene finds in Michael's apartment is the wife of writer Danny McBride.

Selene, the heroine's name, is the Moon in Greek mythology.

The name of the city where the film took place is never mentioned. However Michael's address that we can see on Selene's computer is an apparently misspelled Hungarian address (it should be "Lakatos József u. 39." while it is spelled as "Laktos Joszef 39 ut." instead). You can also read "Eötvös utca", a street in the historical downtown of Budapest, many times while driving by to the secret interrogation place and there is an ad in the subway station where the shooting takes place in the beginning of the movie referring to Szentendre which is a small town near Budapest (obviously left there as non-Hungarian viewers don't understand the text anyway).

A kiss between Michael and Selene (when she unchains him in Lucian's lab) appears in the trailer but was not included in the theatrical release or on the DVD, but it is on the unrated version of Underworld.

Kate Beckinsale first met future husband Len Wiseman on the set.

This movie marked Len Wiseman's feature film directorial debut.

Goofs

When Viktor pushes Michael through the wall, as he lands in the water you can see several large pieces of the broken wall floating on the water behind him, showing them to be polystyrene.

Silver nitrate is a clear substance and looks nothing like the quicksilvery fluid seen in the movie, even in high concentrations (though it may turn black if stored for long periods).

Michael's kneepads are visible when he falls out of the interrogation room window and lands on his hands and knees on the pavement.

When Selene dives out of the subway car rear window and on to the train tracks during the opening subway shootout scene, the ground clearly flexes as she lands, indicating that a mat was used.

When Kahn rolls the grenade down a shaft full of Lycans, the grenade bounces out of the puddle at the bottom. As it does this the explosion begins from within the puddle, underneath the still airborne grenade.

When Viktor pulls the pendant from his daughte, the cord which it hung on breaks nearly completely off leaving only about 1 or 2 inches on either side. When Lucian snatches it off the dusty floor before leaping through the window, the entire cord is intact, and still attached to the pendant.

Towards the end, Selene frees Michael from the examination table by shooting off the chains attached to the handcuffs that bind him to the table. In the next few shots, when Michael is yanking off the ropes that had been around his chest, the handcuffs themselves have disappeared from his wrists, including the chains.

When Lucian's scientist is mixing Michael's blood in the beaker to find out if it is pure, the amount of fluid in the beaker changes between shots.

The myth of a vampire is that you can not see their reflection. In many situations in the movie you are able to see various vampires' reflections.
