Trivia
When Derek and Hansel disguise themselves and sneak into Maury's office, Hansel's jumpsuit has a name tag on which is printed the name "Kumar". This refers to Kumar Pallana, who has appeared in all of 'Anderson, Wes (I)''s films (Bottle Rocket (1996), Rushmore (1998), and The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)).

Christine Taylor's character says she was overweight as a kid; something that her "Hey Dude" (1989) character Melody was as well.
Ben Stiller had several family members in this film: His wife Christine Taylor (Matilda), father Jerry Stiller (Maury Ballstein), mother Anne Meara (protestor who hits Mugatu with an egg), sister Amy Stiller (one of Hansel's friends in his loft), and brother-in-law Mitch Winston (Director of the infomercial).
The Mugatu was a monster from an episode of the original "Star Trek" (1966) TV series. It looked like an ape with curly white hair and a single horn on its forehead. Which was why the same name character played by Will Ferrell made the frustrated comment in the end centered around ..."and I'll be a monkey's uncle..."
'Owen Wilson', who plays Hansel, wore a wig for the entire movie. He was filming Behind Enemy Lines (2001) at the same time, and had to keep his hair short for the role.

Ben Stiller wrote David Bowie's scene as judge of the walk-off into the script without knowing for sure whether he would agree to it.
Bret Easton Ellis, author of the 1998 book Glamorama, about a dimwitted male model who finds himself embroiled in a terrorist ring with roots in the fashion industry, sued Ben Stiller following the release of Zoolander, citing copyright infringement. The case was later settled out of court.
Goofs

When Mugatu is explaining to Derek why he wants him to campaign for him, Todd brings him a large coffee. Mugatu spits it out, with no foam mustache, and for a second a foam mustache appears. After Derek's surprised look, it disappears again.
The shots of the rallies in Malaysia seem to show banners displaying Chinese text, while the Prime Minister's platform shows English and Arabic text. All of these are highly unlikely in the real Malaysia itself. The national and dominant political language of Malaysia is Malay, and is written in Romanized text due to Malaysia's past as a British colony.
